In celebration of Japanese whisky’s centennial, I’m happy to announce the release of the English edition of Japanese Whisky Yearbook 2023. The book was written and published by the Japan Whisky Research Centre and translated into English by me.
Japanese Whisky Yearbook 2023 provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of the Japanese whisky industry. And that means comprehensive — a total of 80 current and future distilleries are covered. No other resource, online or offline, offers this kind of holistic view of Japanese whisky as it stands today. Like the Malt Whisky Yearbook, we plan to update the Japanese Whisky Yearbook annually.
For each distillery, you’ll learn who’s behind it, its location, the latest details of the operation, and what it brings to the table (and the bar). Importantly, you’ll also learn about the background and motivations to build the distillery in the first place. Beautiful color photos of the distilleries, people, and bottles accompany each entry.
Given the language barrier and rapid emergence of Japanese craft whisky over the past few years, keeping track of the state of various new distilleries and their releases can be difficult. As a compendium, the Japanese Whisky Yearbook will help you make sense of it all.
The Japanese Whisky Yearbook 2023 is not a walk down memory lane, passing by shuttered distilleries with huge age-statement Japanese whiskies just sitting on the shelf. It’s also not a novel, a Tokyo whisky bar guide, or a compilation of bottle reviews. Instead, we zoom in on each distillery as a participant helping to build the category’s future.
The English edition of Japanese Whisky Yearbook 2023 is available as both a Kindle edition (worldwide) and print edition (from Amazon JP, with domestic and international shipping). That means you can get it right now and begin reading immediately. You can find the Kindle edition in your local Amazon markets below.

This 100th anniversary is an opportunity to pay homage to the past century of Japanese whisky. It’s also a chance to collect your thoughts about what the next century might look like. To do so, it’s critical to have an accurate view of the industry’s current state. The Japanese Whisky Yearbook 2023 provides just that.

Definitely want to pick this up. But it looks like the print version is sold out and the kindle version is only available on Amazon.co.jp? Any other option for folks who are not in Japan?
Hi Mike, thanks for pointing this out, I’ve updated the article with links to the Kindle version in various Amazon markets. Hopefully yours is listed!
Any idea when the print version might be back in stock? Want to buy this for a friend’s birthday and he doesn’t have a Kindle.
Hi Josh, unfortunately not ETA on a restock just yet! I will be notifying everyone on the nomunication SNS accounts when it’s available again.
Saw that it is back in stock and ordered a copy right away. Looking forward to receiving it!
Awesome! Hope you find it helpful.
