As expected, Yamazaki 55 has set a new record for a single bottle of Japanese whisky sold at auction, selling for a whopping HKD $6.2 million / USD $800K including the buyer’s premium.
The record was set on August 21 at Bonham’s HK. The previous record was set by Yamazaki 50 back in 2018, which sold for around USD $343K at the time.Just 100 bottles of Yamazaki 55 were released this year via lottery here in Japan, with a sticker price of 3.3 million yen after tax (USD $31K).
While expensive, that seems like pocket change compared to this auction sale price. $800K is approximately 25x the original investment. A helluva return!
